Comfort Restored in 100-Year-Old Home Jaffrey, New Hampshire

Overview

When Evan Clements purchased his 1926 home in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, he knew that owning a nearly 100-year-old house would come with challenges, especially when it came to energy use and comfort.

Over time, Evan noticed a steady increase in heating fuel consumption, particularly during unusually cold winters. After hearing about the NHSaves® Home Energy Performance program from a co-worker, Evan decided to apply and Eversource connected him with approved contractor Turn Cycle Solutions to get started.

Goal

Evan’s primary goal was to reduce heating fuel usage and improve comfort throughout his home, especially in problem areas like the crawl space, basement and rooms with noticeable drafts. He was also looking for a solution that felt straightforward and well-supported, knowing that home improvement projects can often be complex, expensive and time-consuming.

Key Stats

  • Incentive received: $6,000
  • Electric Savings: 280 kWh
  • Oil Savings: 73 Gallons
  • Total CO2 Reduced: Over 16 tons

Outcome

Turn Cycle Solutions conducted a comprehensive no-cost home energy audit and identified several opportunities to improve efficiency and comfort. The recommended upgrades included:

  • Air Sealing and Insulation Improvements:
Sealing air leaks and adding insulation in key areas helped reduce drafts and temperature swings between floors.
  • Crawl Space Encapsulation and Rim Joist Work:
A crawl space beneath an enclosed porch was fully encapsulated, helping eliminate cold floors and improving comfort in the room above.
  • Additional Weatherization Measures:
Door kits, insulation upgrades and targeted improvements in the basement further reduced heat loss and improved overall temperature consistency.

The project was completed within a few weeks, with the on-site work wrapping up in just two days. Evan now enjoys a noticeably warmer home with reduced energy use and confidence that his century-old house is better prepared for New Hampshire’s winters.

I can’t overstate the improvement in comfort. The temperature differences between floors are almost gone, the basement feels dramatically better and the room over the crawl space is finally comfortable. The process was easy, the communication was excellent and the results were absolutely worth it.
