Background
Michelle and Nate Folan from Mont Vernon, New Hampshire were always curious about how to live more sustainably, and so when they sought to create a more comfortable home for their multi-generational family, they also wanted to make sure that they minimized their environmental footprint. This meant carefully considering every aspect of the building process, from site selection and material choices to the home’s energy systems. They researched numerous sustainable building practices and energy-efficient homes, eager to learn about the latest technology and strategies they could leverage, and they chose a builder who specialized in net zero homes to help them shape the project from its initial concept to the final execution.
Goal
The Folans’ goal was to build a beautiful, comfortable, and efficient home balancing energy performance, aesthetic appeal, and a comfortable living environment—all within their budget.
Solution
The Folans worked hand-in-hand with Energy Vision Homes to design and build their home, with additional support from Eversource and HERS Rater, Advanced Building Analysis. Some of the energy efficiency upgrades they implemented included:
- Heating and Cooling System. An air source heat pump system combined with a heat pump water heater and energy recovery ventilator to ensure continuous fresh air circulation and control over indoor temperature, no matter what the weather is outside
- Insulation. Double studded walls to accommodate extra insulation, combined with waterproofing and air sealing for a tight thermal envelope
- Windows. High performance triple pane windows to provide some of the same benefits as insulation and help to maintain a comfortable indoor air temperature
The Folans also installed a solar array to offset the home’s energy consumption and help them achieve net zero.
Result
The Folans’ home achieved a HERS score of -9 (including renewables), confirming that their home is operating at net zero. Their success is a testament to their commitment to sustainability and will inspire other homeowners and builders to explore energy-efficient building practices.
“Partnering with Energy Vision Homes and Eversource made this process seamless from start to finish. Their guidance helped us make smart, energy-efficient choices that are now reducing both our energy costs and our environmental impact.” – Michelle and Nate Folan Mont Vernon, New Hampshiire
